The Ham & Yam Festival is held every year on the first weekend in May along the Town Commons in downtown Smithfield. The festival, which started as a challenge from Johnston County ham producers to the ham producers of Smithfield, Virginia, now features an open cooking contest using either hams or yams in casseroles, desserts or main dishes. Great cooks from throughout the area compete for cash prizes.

Other aspects of the festival include: hundreds of arts and craft booths, music, local entertainment, children’s games, carnival rides, agricultural exhibits and special events.
